DBWI: A more notorious crime in September 2001

Eighteen years ago today, a notorious crime occurred. Infamous for its audacity, it brought a wave of international condemnation down upon the perpetrators, and seemed like the return of an age we thought was behind us. I am speaking, of course, of Charles Ingram cheating on Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

Now, it would be hard for any crime to top cheating on a game show so brazenly (and incompetently). But what if someone (or multiple someones) had managed it? What if another crime was committed in September 2001 that overshadowed this controversy?

Well, Who Wants to be a Millionaire wouldn't introduce those crappy new rules that left the whole thing up to producer meddling.

Maybe Survivor wouldn't get off the ground because of that.

Nobody cared about millionaire Payola, we were too busy with wall-to-wall coverage of the just-ended Summer of the Shark.

There was a massive diamond heist in Zurich at the same time - between 30 and 300 million dollars in diamonds went missing. The thieves started an international man hunt by INTERPOL and arrested, but the master mind is still today on the lose.
