DBWI: A gay Elton John?

This WI might seem ludicrous to some, but what if the following celebrities were gay?

*Elton John (May his wife, kids and fans not lynch me)
*Liberace
*Rock Hudson
*Freddy Mercury

Would it have delayed awareness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic? It's a well known fact that the deaths of all the above celebrities due to HIV infection greatly helped raise awareness of the disease in the early 80s.

IC!!!!!!: this thread is disgusting and ASB, sodomites are nasty sinners and Ian should ban you for talking your gross Gay lib clap-trap!

OCC: ok all that was IC i don't feel that way at all and am in fact gay.

Hah, wow. This would completely skew the conceptions of gays today, I know that for a fact. Homosexuality is frequently being referred to as "cleaner" than straight relationships, especially in regards to STDs, despite very little evidence (and I say this as a gay person). I suspect this is mainly because these celebrities finally debunked the old "gay disease" myth. Giving a horde of gay celebrities AIDS won't exactly bode well for gay rights I fear, but then again, perhaps they would have pushed for gay rights, quickening the process.

ooc: I was reading about the AIDS epidemic a while back, and I was like "WTFSAUCE" when I read about how the public ignored the epidemic because it was perceived to be a gay disease (or something like that.) Given that one of my areas of study is the swapping of body fluids (both theoretical and applied), the delay in the recognition of the HIV/AIDS epidemic as a proper threat is something I find bordering on gross negligence by society. As for being gay? I'm not attracted to men enough to be gay.

This was mostly due to the fact that 100% of the early cases identified as AIDS were found in gay men. No one knew what was causing the infection for more than two years after the official start of the epidemic in 1981, though there were AIDS cases going back to the late 1950's. It was really a sad state of affairs for people on all sides of the issue. When the CDC was trying to find the cause and asked that the bath houses in SF be closed to protect the gay population of SF until more information about the virus could be found, the gay population put pressure on the local health department to prevent it from happening. AIDS is the first disease that became more of a civil rights issue than a Public Health issue and an unknown number of people died needlessly.
