DBWI: A Democratic-leaning Vermont

Vermont has been the most consistently Republican state in the history of America, only once voting for a Democratic Presidential candidate (in 1964), and never voting for a Democratic Senator.

Your challenge, should you choose to accept it, is to make Vermont a Democratic state (or at least a state that Democrats can realistically win now and again).

Easy, have the Republicans and the Democrats reverse their political roles with the Republican Party being the conservative party while the Democrats are the liberal party. It is important that the Democratic victory in Vermont in 1964 was caused by divisions within the Republican Party splitting the ballot for the Democratic candidate there to win by just 1,931 votes.

Maybe you could do this if Theodore Roosevelt decides to step down in 1908 instead of running for a second elective term. His preferred successor, the more conservative William Howard Taft, would later be appointed Chief Justice in 1910 although the two would clash on progressive issues. Maybe if Taft had run and won in 1908, he would've taken the GOP in a more conservative direction and this could pave the way for Democrats in Vermont.

Yeah, the New Deal Democrats jumping to the GOP really wreaked havoc on everything that year, and the big business Republicans jumping to the Dems took advantage. But yeah, conservative Vermont? It’s hippie-land. You might as well convince Arkansas to go for the GOP.

Arkansas a Republican state?!? It is competing with Mississippi to see who will end up in 50th in everything.
