So I watched the Welkrieg films (the original Adolf Hitler ones, not the Hollywood remakes from the early 2000s). And it got me wondering how plausible Weltkrieg 2 really was.

For those who aren't aware, Weltkrieg 1 was a historical drama firmly grounded in the events of the actual Great War, Weltkrieg 2 is a saga based on a fictional conflict set between 1939 and 1945 which seems to have been heavily inspired by the brutality of the Second Italo-Abyssinian War, Spanish Civil War, and Second Sino-Japanese War. The plot centred around a revanchist Germany (lead by Adolf Hitler, played by Adolf Hitler) rampaging across europe and slowly (over the course of its six volumes, each of which being 3 hours long) begins to lose ground and initiative. The film was noted for its bleak anti-war message, and the fact that the Weimar Republic had put the entire Reichswehr (including training facilities in the USSR) at his disposal for the battle scenes.

Now its true that Weimar Germany had radical and revanchist under currents, so the base premise doesn't seem too impossible. And honestly given his celebrity status in Germany prior to his suicide, alt-Hitler being dictator doesn't even seem too too implausible.

However, the extent to which the German army dominates the early phase of the war strikes me as being unrealistic. On the other hand, the USSR fighting on, and seemingly getting stronger after most of its industrialized regions have been occupied seems equally unrealistic.

And then of course there's the long list of minor nit-picks; chief amongst which is the existence of the SS (Hitler's private army of war criminals) which I think everyone accepts is merely a plot device to get around the fact that a requirement for receiving government funding was that the German Army couldn't be depicted committing war crimes. Also Spain remaining neutral is weird, Italy had Franco on a pretty tight leash iOTL and Italy joined Germany in the films...

On the plus side, while it wasn't the focus of the films at all, it seems Hitler predicted the Pacific War to a T, only being a bit off on its duration.

So how do you rate the plausibility of Hitler's films?
