We in America have been woefully under-represented on the world stage of Culture: Britain has luminaries like Shakespeare, Shelley, and Keats, France has Dumas and Hugo, even Spain has Cervantes. How could America create art that is the world's envy, and maybe even become the cultural hegemon of the world, with American television, books, and film appearing in countries as far off as Japan? And as a further question, what has stopped the United States (and Canada, to a lesser extent) from reaching much more than a domestic audience?
