DBAHC: Save the two-party system in America

America for much of its history had a two party system (Federalists vs Democratic-Republicans, Democrats vs Whigs, Republicans vs Democrats) but the Great Depression, along with the abolition of the Electoral college in 1939 led to a massive shake up in the political structure of America.

But could it be saved? I know many think that just butterflying the great depression away could have saved it, but could a two-party system survive even with a POD after the Great Depression?

It's unlikely that the two party system survives the explosion of new political systems in the late 1800's through to the 30's, the fall of the war-time coalition in 1944 and then the Civil Rights era in the 50's. Probably the first thing that needs to happen to save the two party system is that in either 1928 or 1932, Herbert Hoover needs to lose, and he needs to lose badly.

I'm not a super expert on politics at this time - but I'm pretty sure either make the immediate political reaction to the Depression more severe (so that Hoover loses in 1928 - which is harder to pull off), or else the next time around Hoover needs to be running against a more popular Al Smith/more healthy Franklin Roosevelt. I don't think there's any way to save the party system after that election as it happens OTL.

Last question, is a Huey Long Democratic run on the table in 1932, or is he destined for the 1936 Socialist/Farm Labor Populist fusion ticket?

E: I've decided the Huey Long/Norman Thomas 1936 ticket is referred to colloquially as 'Long Tom' and this is canon now.

There were talks that Huey Long, governor and senator of Louisiana, had planned to enter the 1932 Democratic Primary but didn’t to give the eventual winner and fellow southerner, John Nance Garner, a better chance. Maybe if Long had entered his populist policies would have quelled the gap in US politics that led to the rise of the Socialist Party.
