DBAHC: Islamic fundamentalist Iran

As you all know, Iran is largely considered to be, by far, the most secular and progressive country in the muslim world, even rivaling the west in some issues.

Your challenge is to have it succumb to islamic fundamentalism instead. You can place the PoD whenever you want. Bonus if Iran becomes an actual theocracy led by the Shia clergy.

Keep the Shah from returning power?
He was more progressive then the Iranian people (and much more progressive then clergy) up until the Iranian Renaissance in the 90's.

The Shah IIRC was nearly overthrown in the early 1980s by an unholy alliance of communists, "islamic socialists", and straight-up islamists.
It was only a direct US intervention that saved his regime, but generally low opinions of the shah did indeed improve in the 90's.

How about if, after the Mossadegh incident, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi is put back on the throne, instead of renouncing his rights in the Esfahan Compromise and letting Ali Reza succeed to the throne? I'm not sure how progressive Mohammed Reza was, but he did advocate the suppression of Tudeh and a heavier use of the secret police from his place of exile in Paris, if I recall correctly - things that Ali Reza always refused to do, even after the attempted coup in 1983 (although there wasn't much of Tudeh left by then).
