David, earl of Huntingdon and Malcolm IV of Scotland

This is very true. I suppose they'd need a fair few lucky breaks to have any chance gaining leeway.

Regarding David earl of Huntingdon becoming King himself, how might he fare?

Perhaps red and gold with the cross of St Andrew?
A voided red saltire? Perhaps with a mascle so it looks almost like a fret.
Thinking about the fleury tressure it might also be a reference to the columbine flower that looks like 5 fleurdelys joined together. So perhaps a cinquefoil with fleury tips.
Alternatively some form of red crancelin bend or fesswise, perhaps 2 in parallel hinting at otl double tressure?

I like the image of the voided red saltire that would be pretty awesome.
