Austro-Prussian War 1866
After the war Austria did not conclude the Ausgleich with Hungary marking the end of the Austrian Empire.
The Austrian Chancellor von Beust wanted revenge against Prussia and he started to work toward such goal. He reformed the army so that it was up to Prussian standards and strengthened the southern German states. He tried to make the Austrian industry stronger and larger but it failed miserably so he was stuck with what he had. Bismarck watched the the growing Austrian revenge movement with concern and also pressured the Prussian military to grow which it did of course. It seemed that the Second Austro-Prussian War was destined to start soon after the first one ended. Bismarck also worked towards a unified German with or without Austria during this time. The German as a people wanted unification but there were a number of higher officials who managed to stop unification until after the end of the 2nd war .
