Dano-Scottish War

Hey Guys,

In 1469 the Danish pawned the Orkney and Shetland islands to Scotland as part of a dowry payment, the agreement was that, once the dowry had been paid in full, the islands would be given back to the Danes. However the Scots, obviously, reneged on this agreement and, despite numerous appeals made by the Danes over the next few centuries, the Norse laws were done away with in 1611.

However, what if the Danes didn't put up with this and went to war with Scotland? Whether it's after they pay off the dowry or maybe even by joining the English when the Scottish declare war on them during the War of the League of Cambrai?

Let's say the Danish King in the scenario is willing to go to war over the islands, who wins? The Scottish Navy was never up to much and I can imagine that, whilst the Danes weren't powerful either, they may be able to gain some kind of naval dominance?

Can Denmark afford to go to war over the North Sea at this time? During the War of the League of Cambrai, Kristian II of Denmark was busy securing first his Danish and Norwegian thrones and then fighting the next in the long, long row of Swedish rebellions against the Kalmar Union.

1509, King Hans managed to get the Swedes to admit his right to the throne and to pay a yearly tribute. 1510, the Swedes decided to refuse to pay. War raged until a cease fire 1513, when the parties decided to have a Union meeting 1514. Since Hans died 1513, the meeting was postponed to 1515 and then to 1517, when the Swedes refused to turn up and Kristian had to go to war for the Swedish thone again, a war he won 1520, celebrated by slaughtered the nobility he had promised amnesty. 1521 the Swedes rose again, this time lead by Gustav Eriksson (Wasa).

Where in this mess will the Danes find time and resources to fight Scotland?

The Danes had the resources to go to war against someone else than Sweden during the era more or less only three times.

1. When Erik of Pommerania went to war with Holstein and the Hansa 1410-1435 (this paired with the Sound toll and centralising efforts and higher taxes led to the Engelbrekt rising in Sweden 1434, which de facto meant the end of the Kalmar Union).

2. When Denmark wage war on the Holy Roman Emperor, Karl V, 1542-1543, as the Emperor supports the Kürfurst and Elector of the Palatine Frederick II for the Danish throne.

3. When Denmark involves itself in the 30 years' war 1618-1628.

All other wars are either civil wars or wars against Sweden for the supremacy of the Baltic region - and there's LOTS of them.

Find somewhere in this mess time for Denmark to turn its back towards towards both Sweden and the German Emperor to fight Scotland.

Looking at the Wiki article for the Shetlands (also pawned), it says that Danish king had no right to the islands. It would be interesting if they decided to take them back, as having been illegitimately pawned....
Edit: that would be a different question than the OP.
