Dale Earnhardt and Kenny Schrader die?

Darrell: "They go into turn four!, Mikey has the lead, with Jr. following close behind!"
Larry: "Woah! We got big trouble! Earnhardt into the wall and, oh my! Schrader is flipping! And flipping!"
Darrell: "Wow, keep goin' Mikey, you got it, YOU GOT IT!"
Mike: "And Michael Waltrip wins!"
Darrell: "Yeah! Hope they're ok back there."

EMTs on scene began CPR on both drivers. Dale Earnhardt died on impact, but Schrader lived till he reached the hospital, where he fell into ventricular fibrillation, and died soon afterwards.

ESPN: Dale Earnhardt and Kenny Schrader have died today due to injuries during the last lap of the Daytona 500...

What happens to the sport? Where does it go from there?

Interesting...I have never seen a NASCAR topic on these boards before.

Dale's death was devastating enough. Were an additional death to occur that day, such as Ken Schrader's, all heck would break lose.

I can imagine at least some reaction from Capitol Hill in the form of congressional hearings about the safety of NASCAR races. Media figures would also call for drastic changes NASCAR safety regs. An event like this might jumpstart a Car-of-Tomorrow before OTL.

This would make an interesting timeline.

Could this be some sort of salvation for American Open-Wheel racing? Probably not, as the decline was visible by 2001. Perhaps auto racing as a whole might cool down as a results of the double-deaths in NASCAR.

you would see a much stricter crackdown on safety regulations, as if after earnhardt wasnt serious enough. You would probably see the "headrest" a lot earlier, etc. as well as the chain that hooks the helmet to the seat would also become mandatory (as it did OTL after earnhardt). In other words, a more serious crackdown on safety, and since human beings are sadistic, a jump in viewers.
