Great read! I dunno what is worse as a Bears fan...not having Rodgers at all or having Rodgers for a decade and losing him to Minnesota because ownership is cheap as all hell.

I will start a full summary of jersey number differences soon. (Sorry for not doing it sooner; I’ve been busy with the start of spring semester and getting used to my new schedule.) I’ll be covering 2 or 3 draft classes per post. The ones I have already covered will be included in the full summary simply so it’s all in one place.

I am leaving on Thursday for a trip to Vermont to attend my cousin’s wedding, and won’t get back until the following Tuesday night. I am still working on jersey number differences, so I will try to get the first of those posts up tonight or tomorrow. The rest will have to wait until I return from the trip.

Edit: The first post is going to have to wait until after I get back.

Sorry for the delay. I've had other stuff on my plate lately. Here's the full list of jersey number differences (and hoo boy, it's a long one).

2005 Draftees:

Cedric Benson: Buccaneers already had a 32 (Michael Pittman). The Buccaneers’ OTL first-round pick in 2005 (Cadillac Williams) was a running back, too, and ended up wearing 24, so for the sake of simplicity, let’s say Benson gets 24 instead. (Interesting sidenote: if Williams goes to the Bucs as OTL and Benson goes to the Titans instead, both Williams and Benson end up keeping their OTL jersey numbers, as the Titans’ OTL first-round pick ended up wearing 32.)

Cadillac Williams: Since the Titans already had a 24 and their OTL first-rounder ended up wearing 32, let’s say Williams wears 32.

Adam Jones: Considering Antrel Rolle (the Cardinals’ OTL first-round pick) ended up wearing 21, let’s keep things simple by giving that #21 jersey to Jones instead.

Antrel Rolle: Same situation as with Adam Jones. In this case, Rolle gets Carlos Rogers’ #22 jersey.

2006 Draftees:

Michael Huff: IOTL, the Cardinals signed safety Matt Ware in September of 2006, and Ware ended up wearing 22. Since Huff gets drafted by the Cardinals in April 2006 ITTL, the Cardinals never end up needing to sign Matt Ware, so let’s say Huff ends up wearing 22 instead.

Matt Leinart: Drafted by the Cardinals IOTL and wore 7. Since the Broncos draft him ITTL, he’d have to use a different number. 1, 2, and 12 were all available. Considering he wore 11 in college, he’d probably end up wearing 12 ITTL IMO.

DeAngelo Williams: Drafted by the Panthers IOTL and wore 34. The Steelers had already retired 32 and 36, and the only jersey numbers in the thirties that weren’t already in use were 30 and 33. I’m leaning toward him choosing 30, since it ends in a 0 (he wore 20 in college).

2007 Draftees:

Joe Thomas: The Lions already had a 73 (Thomas’ OTL number) and a 72 (his college jersey number). Since Manuel Ramirez wasn’t drafted until the fourth round, 71 would still be available, so let’s say Joe Thomas wears 71 and Ramirez wears some other number.

Adrian Peterson: The Cardinals already had a 28 (JJ Arrington), but 29 and 30 were both available. Since Arrington wore 30 in college, I’m guessing that ITTL, the Cardinals change Arrington’s jersey number to 30 and give 28 to Peterson.

Marshawn Lynch: IOTL, the only reason he wore 23 on the Bills is because 24 and 10 were already taken. ITTL, he gets to wear 24 right away.

Dwayne Bowe: IOTL, the Chiefs gave him 82, since 80 and 81 were already taken. The Lions already had an 80 as well. Since Calvin Johnson is on the Raiders ITTL, Bowe gets 81.

2008 Draftees:

Matt Ryan: This is an easy one. Since Rodgers is on the Bears ITTL, and Matt Ryan wore 12 in college, Ryan wears 12 for the Packers ITTL.

Aqib Talib: Since Matt Forte doesn’t get drafted by the Bears ITTL, Talib gets 22. 28 was already retired and the other twenties are already in use. (Also, which team drafts Matt Forte ITTL?)

Jake Long: The Falcons already had a 77 (Tyson Clabo). 78 was available, though, so let’s go with that.

2009 Draftees:

Matthew Stafford: Wore 7 in college. The only reason he didn’t wear 7 in the NFL as a rookie is because the Lions had already retired it. The Falcons don’t retire numbers, and since 7 wasn’t in use at the time, it’s safe to assume the Falcons would let him wear it.

Andre Smith: The Seahawks already had a #71: Walter Jones, whose number would be retired in April 2010. The Seahawks also had a #70 in Na’Shan Goddard, but Goddard was on the practice squad. ITTL, let’s say Smith gets #70.

Aaron Curry: IOTL, the Browns signed undrafted free agent outside linebacker Marcus Benard, who ended up wearing 58. Since they draft outside linebacker Aaron Curry ITTL, let’s give 58 to Aaron Curry instead.

Eugene Monroe: Since Andre Smith is on the Seahawks ITTL, for simplicity’s sake, let’s give that #71 Bengals jersey to Monroe. Fun fact: they both play the same position (offensive tackle)!

Aaron Maybin: IOTL, the Jaguars signed two undrafted free agent defensive ends after the ’09 Draft: Jeremy Navarre (#94) and Julius Williams (#90). Since they draft Maybin ITTL, Maybin would end up wearing either 90 or 94.

Clay Matthews III: Wore 47 in college. Since the Dolphins didn’t have a 47, he doesn’t need to switch his number to 52 ITTL.

LeSean McCoy: Wore 25 in college. IOTL, the Browns did have a 25 (Coye Francies), but he was drafted in the sixth round of the 2009 NFL Draft. Since McCoy gets picked in the second round of the ’09 Draft ITTL, he would take 25 first, forcing Francies (or whoever the Browns draft in the sixth round ITTL) to wear a different number.

2010 Draftees:

Anthony Davis: The Raiders already had a 76. Since Jared Veldheer (#68) and Bruce Campbell (#74) weren’t drafted until the third and fourth round, respectively, both of those numbers would still be available during the first round. I’m personally leaning towards Davis wearing #68, since Veldheer, like Davis, was an offensive tackle at the time.

Jason Pierre-Paul: This depends on whether or not the Bears still sign Julius Peppers in March 2010 ITTL. If they don’t, then 90 would be available. If the Bears do sign Peppers ITTL, then Pierre-Paul probably wears 96 as a rookie ITTL (since Patrick Trahan wasn’t signed to the Bears practice squad until January 2011). (Sidenote: Because Jacoby Jones gets traded to the Giants ITTL, he’d be forced to wear 17. All the other WR numbers were either in use or had already been retired.)

Golden Tate: Since 80, 81, and 82 were already in use, he’d probably wear 83 ITTL.

Dez Bryant: Packers already had an 88, so I think he’d wear 84 ITTL. (This also forces DJ Williams to take number 86 in 2011.)

Emmanuel Sanders: The Chargers already had an 88 (Kris Wilson), but IOTL, before the 2010 season, they signed rookie WR Seyi Ajirotutu, who had gone undrafted. Ajirotutu ended up wearing 89. However, since the Chargers draft Sanders ITTL, it’s safe to assume Sanders wears 89 for the Chargers ITTL.

Jacques McClendon: Drafted in the fourth round by the Colts in 2010 IOTL. If he still gets drafted by the Colts ITTL, 80 will have already been taken by Jimmy Graham, since Graham gets drafted by the Colts in round 3 ITTL.

Sidenote: Rolando McClain wore 55 IOTL for the Raiders. Since the Jaguars take him in the first round IOTL, they probably wouldn’t trade down with Oakland during the fourth round, meaning Kirk Morrison never goes to Jacksonville. Thus, 55 is available. Even if the trade still happens ITTL, McClain will have already been drafted, meaning Morrison has to wear a different number.

Sidenote 2: Out of curiosity, which team drafts Tyson Alualu ITTL?

2011 Draftees:

Cam Newton: Wore 2 at Auburn. Panthers already had a player wearing 2. Steelers didn’t, so Newton wears 2 ITTL.

Von Miller: The Panthers already had a 58. IOTL, after the draft, they signed undrafted free agent Thomas Keiser, who wore 98. They probably wouldn’t sign Thomas Keiser ITTL, so for simplicity’s sake, let’s give that #98 to Von Miller instead. (Hey, look, they both end in 8!)

Marcell Dareus: Since Von Miller is on the Panthers ITTL, let’s say Dareus gets that #58 jersey instead. As a bonus, this would be only 1 off his college jersey number (57).

Nick Fairley: The Bills already had a 98. Since Dareus is on the Broncos ITTL, let’s say Fairley gets #99 instead. (Also, who do the Lions end up drafting in the first round ITTL?)

Sidenote: IOTL, the NFL only started allowing LBs to wear 40-49 in 2015. If they make that change in 2011 ITTL, Justin Houston and Von Miller both get to wear their college jersey numbers (42 and 40, respectively).

Sidenote 2: Marlon Moore wore 14 for the Dolphins in 2011 IOTL. However, since the Dolphins had only signed Moore the year before as an undrafted free agent, they’d probably change his jersey number, since they take Andy Dalton in the first round in 2011 ITTL. Dalton would still wear 14. As for Moore, he’d probably end up wearing 17.

2012 season: Since Peyton gets signed by the Cardinals ITTL, I’m guessing the Cardinals probably change Kerry Taylor’s jersey number to 13 so Manning can keep wearing 18. (Alternatively, 16 would have been available. Maybe Peyton goes back to his college jersey number in 2012 ITTL?)

2012 draftees:

Trent Richardson: Redskins had retired 33 in honor of Sammy Baugh. 35 was available, though, so let’s go with that.

Matt Kalil: The Rams had retired 75 in honor of Deacon Jones, so 75 was unavaialable. Since they take an offensive tackle in Kalil in the first round ITTL, they probably wouldn’t have drafted Rokevious Watkins (who ended up wearing 73) later on in the draft. Let’s give that #73 jersey to Kalil.

Justin Blackmon: The Vikings already had a 14 (Blackmon’s OTL jersey number) and an 81 (his college jersey number). Since Jarius Wright, who ended up wearing 17 IOTL, wasn’t drafted until the fourth round, 17 would have been available, so let’s go with #17 for Blackmon. (Also, who, if anyone, do the Jaguars draft in the first round in 2012 ITTL?)

Ryan Tannehill: For the sake of simplicity, let’s assume Tannehill wears 3 ITTL (since Wilson gets drafted by the Eagles).

Doug Martin: Wears 31 ITTL. (Closest number to 22 that was available. IOTL, Isaiah Frey took 31, but he wasn’t drafted until the sixth round of the 2012 Draft.)

Brock Osweiler: Wore 17 in college. ITTL, the Lions draft Osweiler in the second round, so 17 would still have been available. (IOTL, Kellen Moore wore 17 for the Lions in 2012, but was signed after having gone undrafted in the 2012 Draft. Since the Lions draft Osweiler ITTL, they don’t end up needing to sign Moore.)

Kirk Cousins: Ends up wearing 7, probably. (Closest available number to 8, which he wore in college.)

Sidenote: RGIII still ends up wearing 10. Since Jared Green, the player who wore #10 for the Panthers in 2012 IOTL (albeit on the practice squad), was signed as an undrafted free agent, #10 would still have been available for RGIII. Maybe Green wears 13 in this scenario?

2013 draftees: None. Xavier Rhodes still ends up wearing 29 ITTL, but only because the Bears draft Doug Martin in 2012 (and therefore do not sign Michael Bush, who wore 29 for the Bears in 2013 IOTL. Manti Te’o is an early second-round pick, so I think the Bears might decide to give him number 50. IOTL, the Bears signed James Anderson in March 2013, and he ended up wearing 50. Since Anderson was only a third-rounder (2006), I think the Bears would let Te’o wear 50 and switch Anderson’s number to something else. By the same logic, the Bears probably wouldn’t draft Khaseem Greene (i.e., they’d probably prefer a second-rounder and two third-rounders as opposed to a 2, a 3, and a 4). Greene wore 59 in his rookie season with the Bears IOTL, so for simplicity’s sake, let’s say number 59 goes to Anderson instead.

2014 draftees:

Greg Robinson: The only reason Robinson didn’t wear his college jersey number (73) is because the Rams already had a #73. ITTL, he does get to wear it, since Frank Kearse (who wore 73 for the Redskins in 2014 IOTL) wasn’t signed until May 2014.

Justin Gilbert: Since the Buccaneers already had a 21, let’s give Gilbert 39. My reasoning for this is that since the Bucs draft Gilbert ITTL, Brandon Dixon (who wore 39 IOTL), who they signed in September 2014, won’t be able to wear 39 because it’ll already be taken. Also, as a result, Dixon remains on Tampa Bay’s practice squad.

Jimmy Garoppolo: Assuming Jake Locker still gets drafted by the Titans in 2011, Garoppolo doesn’t get to wear 10 in his rookie year ITTL (sorry Jimmy Garoppolo fans). Let’s give him 7 for simplicity (since the QB the Titans drafted in 2011 IOTL wore 7).

Sidenote: Out of curiosity, where do Khalil Mack, Odell Beckham Jr., and Haha Clinton-Dix end up being drafted to ITTL? (Since I’m a Hawkeyes fan, I’m also curious as to where C.J. Fiedorowicz and Christian Kirksey end up ITTL.) Also, since the Patriots don’t draft Garoppolo, who ends up being the Patriots’ backup QB ITTL?

2015 draftees:

Marcus Mariota: Mike Glennon was already wearing 8 for the Bucs. Let’s keep things simple by having Mariota wear #3 for the Buccaneers instead of Jameis Winston.

Jameis Winston: Speaking of Jameis Winston, he can’t wear #3 ITTL because the Chiefs had already retired it in honor of Jan Stenerud. Winston’s college jersey number, 5, is also unavailable, since it was already being worn by Cairo Santos. Let’s say Winston wears 4 ITTL. The Chiefs did have a #4 in 2015 IOTL, but the person wearing it (Da’Ron Brown) wasn’t selected until the last round of the 2015 draft and was on the practice squad that whole season. Also, since Da’Ron Brown was a wide receiver, let’s say Brown wears 14 ITTL.

Amari Cooper: The Jaguars already had an 89. 87 would have been available, though, since the Jaguars didn’t draft Neal Sterling until the seventh round. In fact, since they get a WR earlier, they probably wouldn’t even draft Sterling at all ITTL, so 87 goes to Amari Cooper instead.

Dante Fowler Jr.: Since the Raiders draft Fowler Jr. ITTL, they probably wouldn’t take defensive ends in back-to-back rounds, so they probably wouldn’t draft Mario Edwards, Jr. ITTL. For simplicity’s sake, let’s say Fowler gets 97 instead of Edwards.

Kevin White: Didn’t wear his college jersey number, 11, IOTL because it was already being worn by another player. ITTL, it’s because the Giants had already retired 11 in honor of Phil Simms. If Odell Beckham Jr. still gets drafted by the Giants in 2014 ITTL, White would probably wear 18 (since Geremy Davis wasn’t drafted until round 6 of the 2015 draft). If not, then he would wear 13.

Ereck Flowers: Wore 74 in college. He only wore 76 IOTL because the Giants already had a 74. Since Cameron Erving (who wore 74 for the Browns IOTL) wasn’t drafted until pick 19, 74 would still have been available, so ITTL, Flowers gets to wear the same number he wore in college.

David Johnson: Wears 35 ITTL. I picked it not only because it’s a multiple of his college jersey number (7), but also because Denzel Rice (who wore 35 for the Eagles in 2015 IOTL) wouldn’t have been on the team yet, since he went undrafted and was signed as an undrafted free agent.
