How would the American automobile have faired if cheap electric cars had not become standard? If the technology had not emerged from President Udall´s energy program. and the Japanese companies had not pioneered the electrics and forced Ford, GM and Chrysler to jump on the bandwagon,What if gas powered vehicles had not been phased out by 1991. Where would we be today? In what would have been a major news story decades ago, world oil prices increased dramatically in the past few years. Could high gasoline prices have actually forced Americans to give up their SÛVs? Of course, one difference would be obvious, I am thinking about all the businesses that sold gasoline ( gas stations we called them) that used to line city streets and highways- The etiquette allowed even a non customer to come in and use the restrooms. The tax payer did not have to spend so much less money on rest stops and there were many more opportunities to relieve oneself.
