Cyclone NARGIS- USS ESSEX battlegroup forcibly delivers humanitarian aid

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USS_Essex_(LHD-2)

WI back in June 2008 the Bush admin had authorised the USS ESSEX battlegroup to deliver humanitarian aid in the cyclone-wrecked area of Burma, regardless of the junta's refusal to allow such delivery ? Could the
7th Fleet have become involved in a shooting match with Burmese junta forces over the issue of helping natural disaster victims ?

Well Mr. Bush isnt going to survive the rest of his term.

How's that? Are you saying that the Burmese government would assassinate Bush? Preposterous, for two reasons:1. I doubt they have the resources and ability to do it, and2. Even if they do, what do they get? President Cheney, that's what, and an America with an ironclad excuse to drop the hammer on Burma in a big way.

This would be good for Bush in my opinion. I mean trying to give humanitarian aid and being denied and shot for trying to help can't hurt the man more then he was by the end of his presidency.

I would assume he is referring to impeachment, not assassination.

I am not sure that impeachment would occur, but then, I don't think military force would have been authorized in this situation, and possibly would not have been in the interests of the United States - my first instinct is that, rather than improve the image of the US abroad, such a move would seriously harm America's image. I think the world would focus more on any possible shooting than any humanitarian benefits (which, even if no actual conflict occurs during the delivery, might prove to be nonexistent, should the Burmese government confiscate the aid or begin reprisals).

I certainly don't feel that this move would be politically acceptable, either, and would have caused serious damage to the Republican Party.

I think part of the "forcibly delivering humanitarian aid" would be destroying any Burmese force that attempts to do that.

This would boost Bush's standing in the world. Only anti-military types and non-interventionists would disapprove of it. I can imagine Democrats and Republicans uniting to praise Bush- perhaps even Dennis Kucinich would support it. (Not Ron Paul though...)
