Cultural/Scientific WI: No Jersey Shore Shark Attacks of 1916:

The Jersey Shark Attacks in this year were a big part in how sharks became stock monsters in American pop culture, as well as changing some mistaken ideas of shark biology. Without these attacks, what does American science and pop culture do with sharks? Would say, crocodiles and alligators replace them?

No Jaws by Peter Benchley, which in addition to butterflying away one of my favorite writers, would likely butterfly away Steven Spielberg's career, and maybe change the nature of the summer blockbuster

I think not having Jaws 2, Jaws 3 and Jaws: The Revenge might just be worth it.

Umm, wasn't Spielberg's first hit Duel? Not having Jaws will hurt, but I doubt it would doom his career entirely(might put a different spin on it though.)

Since one can't decently translate Jaws in french - Machoires would make a silly movie title - Jaws got translated as Les dents de la mer - Teeth of the sea.
Fine, except that Jaws 2 inevitably ended as Les dents de la mer 2 which sounds like Les dents de la merde

shit with teeth

Duel and Jaws are a world apart in many ways. Like George Lucas before Star Wars, Jaws made his career and got him out of small films like duel. Plus, it invented the blockbuster, Spielberg's bread and butter.
