Cuba spreads the revolution

When Fidel Castro took power in Cuba via a revolution, he wanted to inspire/support more revolutions throughout Latin America. As far as I know, he didn't get much done, mostly because he had to deal with the USA.(I am no expert on the matter, and may be wrong.) Is there any way that he might cause some communist revolutions throughout the region?

Fidel and Che did try to spread revolution in much of Central and South America (most notably in Nicaragua and Bolivia), as well as adventures in Africa (including Angola, Mozambique, and Namibia). So what you're describing is OTL.

Che Guevara's adventures in Congo and Bolivia were obvious failures. In Bolivia he expected to deal only with Bolivia's poorly armed, heavily demoralized national army. He didn't seem to consider the possibility of American help to Boliva, a mistake which cost him his life.

So I suppose the OP's question is how Cuba can succesfully spread their revolution to countries like Congo, Namibia and Bolivia. Personally I think this is going to be near-impossible, since South Africa and Rhodesia are always going to firmly oppose communist revolution in Namibia or elsewhere in southern Africa, while the USA of course won't stand idly by if Cuba tries to bring communism to Bolivia or somewhere else in Latin America.

He did try to do this, frequently, and without much success.

It is sometimes hard to get a revolution going when you are trying to start it at the barrel of the gun going up against determined opposition.

I was under the impression that stuff in Africa was mostly as a Soviet stand in, going where Soviets wanted to go but couldn't because of detante and stuff.

One of the reasons the communist revolution failed in Angola was America quietly supporting South Africa.
Because of internal American politics, (civil rights movement, suppression of KKK, encouraging a "coloured" middle class, etc) the USA could never be seen openly supporting an apartheid state, but the USA still needed rare metals (titanium, molybdenum, etc) from South African mines.

Latin America would be a potential spot for another counter insurgency war a la Vietnam lite.

UNLESS it is Mexico, then you have a potential for the war and terrorism to spill over into the US.

Then you have the potential for a counter insurgency war a la Vietnam on Steroids.

A war we have to win. A war with one of the fronts on American soil.

If that gets bad enough it could tip the Cold War to the USSR.

Mexican civil war with communists against the government and American involvement sounds like an interesting TL...
