CSA Wins: Fate of the Southwest

No, this isn't one of the typical 'CSA gets a chunk of the Southwest' questions.

In OTL, the act that divided Arizona and New Mexico passed in 1863 - if the CSA wins the war, especially in 1862/1863, would the two territories stay whole, now that it was a boder state? Also, what would be the fate of West Texas?

The Confederacy gets nothing west of Texas (assuming they get to keep the whole state) and will be lucky to keep hold of the Indian Territory. Any attempts to conquer Mexico's norte are a non-starter (which does not mean that the Confederates won't try).

Of course, that's a given, as stated in the OP. I'm more interested in the USA's reaction, specifically that toward the New Mexico and Arizona territories, as well as West Texas.

Would the USA still split the New Mexico territory, or would they keep it whole as to create a strong border state?

Much the same, would West Texas stay in the USA or go the CSA with the rest of Texas?

Hrmm. Well, Turtledove was right in that Republican chicanery is what gave us a New Mexico and Arizona instead of one state, so assuming Republicans aren't the ones making territorial policy in DC, I bet it'd be kept one state and probably garrisoned up since it'll be in charge of the US/Mexico/CS border region.

As for West Texas.....if the Union bothers keeping it, I see it becoming mostly a huge garrison state since not so many folks lived there during the 1860s. In that case, mega-New Mexico is far less fortified and receives far less Government attention, which is a net negative for states in the Far West.

So the division of the territory depends far more on Republican potency than anything else? Sort of the same reason we have two Dakotas?

Would the Union keep it, or would the CSA get it since technically it was part of Texas?
