Crusader Jerusalem Government

WI: Richard the Lionhearted had actually re-captured Jersusalem during the 3rd Crusade? Who becomes king? The kingdom is now much weaker than before Hattin, so do the military orders take on more of it's defense? Are the castles of Outer-Jordan also retaken, since they are so vital to the defense of Jersusalem? Do the English demand a greater role in the government since it was their king who retook Jerusalem? Any more ideas?

Richard the Lionheart was the closest blood relative to Baldwin IV and Sibylla.. so if he captures Jerusalem the crown goes to him... Unless the Haute Cour of Jerusalem thinks otherwise...

To the victors the spoils. While there was a Jersulem royal bloodline, and Richard might have been related to them, their position was never really universally accepted anyways. The guy who takes the holy city from the damn infidels gets to rule it, of course!

...after all, how else to mtivate crusaders than by promises of land? ;)

Of course, that means that Richard and, err, teh King fo France (what was the name again?) might come into arguing. Or, if its Barbarossas troops changing the outcome, him, too (but if his troops make it to the Levantine, hed sure have the best powerbase...)

Richard conquered Cyprus and technically ruled it for one year, before selling it to the Knights Templar when it became troublesome. Richard had dedicated virtually his whole life before ascending the throne of England consolidating his rule in Aquitaine and politicking with his family. I think his focus was Europe and France in particular, and that had he survived longer he would have wanted to be remembered for his triumphs therein. I think you have to say that he would consider Jerusalem rightfully his to deal with, before selling it on to either a crusader state or a claimant who was close to him or would become a useful ally after recieving Jerusalem as I don't think he would consider it worth keeping - too much threat of reconquest for him to have to worry about from the other side of Europe. Much though it interests me, I can't see him keeping Jerusalem for long.

I was thinking along the same lines. Richard would not have wanted to remain in the East indefinitely. That would have given Philip Augustus of France more time to stir up trouble in Richard's French possessions. Maybe Richard would have sent one of his brothers as his representative in Palestine.

Who? John Lackland? He would mess up Palestine and propably would be kicked out by local lords soon enough...

Crusader Jerusalem

He would probably do less damage than what he did to the Angevin empire.
