So, I'm trying to do some research on how warships developed in the mid-to-late 19th century. From what I know, battleships evolved rapidly from ironclads and shifted through many different phases of design. Submarines saw some decent, but comparatively underwhelming, development. I'll ask more about torpedo boats and destroyers sometime in the future. But, as the main topic suggests, I'm trying to find out about cruisers. So here are my questions:

-What were cruisers made out of around 1850? 1865? 1880? 1895?

-When was wood no longer used to build cruisers? When did iron begin to be used? What about steel?

-What's the difference between an iron hull and iron armor?

-What were some important ships in the development of cruisers?

-When did cruising warships finally drop the sails?

-What was the standard armament of cruisers around 1850? 1865? 1880? 1895?

-How were cruisers configured around 1850? 1865? 1880? 1895?

I'll think of more questions later on.
