Crimson Skies

Whew, i just finished this map.

What's wrong with this map?

Not bad. Looks nicer than mine. Thanks for posting it. I do have several gripes.

1) The Columbia/Appalachia boundary is wrong! Cumberland is the headquarters of one of the major aircraft manufacturers (i think Fairchild) and because of their location in neutral Columbia, many of their airplanes are used by pirates. So Maryland's panhandle is in Columbia.

2) It's Appalachia, not Appalachian Territory.

3) If you're going to show the Outer Banks as separate from Dixie, you've got to do the same for Oklahoma and Texas.

4) Just noticed another error in Columbia's borders, the Twelve Mile Circle (that bump at the top of Delaware) went to the Empire State.

5) The colors of the ISA and Ontario are too similar.

There're several other differences between our maps, which i'm not sure who's wrong. F'r'nstance, Long Island. Empire State or Atlantic Confederation?

A gripe i've had against the original maps, the Disputed Territories. Even if control's not effective, that land will still be claimed. That's why i showed Alberta and Saskatchewan as part of Ontario while you showed them as Disputed Territories. They're technically part of Ontario, but only nominally. Why wouldn't Calfornia and Deseret claim part of the Territories? I think i smell a map to be made.

Huh. I can't find my copy of the boardgame, but my ever-favorite Airman's Gazetteer doesn't even mention the name Appalachian Territory. It lists AKAs as Ridgerunner Territories or Moonshine Nation. Even your link uses Appalachia throughout the entry.

On another point, regarding my #3, that same Gazetteer shows the Protectorate of the Outer Banks as separate from Dixie (but doesn't give it it's own entry), but only denotes Oklahoma's existence with a thin line. I.E. you're more right than i am on that.

I don't like redundant threads, so I'm bumping this one to keep Crimson Skies discussion local.

There's a fellow who created his own (slightly modified) Crimson Skies atlas, found here: https://sites.google.com/site/crimsonskiessite/

Really cool site, he seems to have good insight about the alternate development of air forces as well. His splitting up of Russia is interesting too, (Red Russia under Stalin in Moscow vs. Blue Russia under Kirov in Leningrad vs. Green Russia under Bukharin in the Far Eastern Republics vs. the White Russians). He then goes on to make a lot of sensible tweaks to make the CS universe a bit more plausible. He adds some other interesting ideas too like a Second Spanish Republic taking its old Caribbean holdings in the '30s while the U.S. is too busy falling apart (and when the Spanish Civil War happens, these new reconquered holdings are split as well), and Hollywood supporting the Nationalists in China to keep Japan busy so it can expand into the Pacific.

Nope, unfortunately, but it's not too different from canon.

Edit: Territorially, speaking. Historically, his universe has a few bigger differences like a more severe set of Secession Wars to explain the dissolution of the U.S. and the military buildup in the successor states.

One of my favorite PC games. I'm not sure I buy all that much of the background, but CS remains one of the best, true, AH PC games out there. As a zepophile, I find the emphasis on zeppelins simply wonderful, but I have to admit that you would really need to change the basic laws of physics to have armored zeps with heavy guns that don't crumple to pieces when an airplane collides with them at full speed. In the game, this kills and destroys the plane and the zep flies on as if nothing happened. The game would have been better if zeps were modelled a bit more realistically - a bit super maybe - but not flying battleships.

Who cares about the physics of the thing? It wouldn't have been Crimson Skies if we weren't allowed to pull out of a two thousand meter nosedive at about ten meters away from the ground. ;)

I'd love to see a map out of this. The multiple Russias are interesting (and I utterly adore the flags they come with [if only they were bigger!]), but I can't say I find the backstory behind them too plausible, even taking into account the nature of Crimson Skies.

Remember, those planes wouldn't be able to fly without X-29 computers in them, so the superzepp idea should be just fine-stronger duralumin? Better lifting cell design? Whatever.

You should redo the timeline and maps. It's like Trek-everyones idea is different or creates timeline anomalies.

I suggest no WWII. I like the global disarray of economies and politics due to the Great War. Add a ineffectual League of Nations and you'll have balkanisations, civil war and revolutions everywhere.

I'd have Fu Manchu assassinate Mao and Chiang-form a Warlord Coalition that spurs air piracy, sea piracy, smuggling, slavery...wait, that sounds familiar..

Also, military tech keeps advancing in dribs and drabs reacting to surges of confrontations. Good venue for alternate arms, afv's etc.
