A completely crazy idea I've just thought up.

Islam is unusually successful in Europe, taking over the Byzantines following the Battle of the Masts and overrunning much of southern France in the aftermath of the conquest of Iberia. On the other hand, the Sasanians have moved their capital to the Iranian Plateau and Islam does not make much headway east of the Zagros.

In the 8th century, Turkic peoples convert to Nestorianism and overrun the rump Sasanian state. They then attack and defeat the Caliphate, taking over Mesopotamia, the Levant, and Egypt. The Turks even conquer Mecca itself and the Bedouins either convert to Nestorianism or flee across the Red Sea to Ethiopia (where they conquer Aksum and establish an Arab-ruled state). The Berbers of North Africa successfully revolt around the same time, converting to various strands of African Christianity.

Islam survives only in Ethiopia, in Spain and southern France, and in the former Byzantine empire. In the late 8th/early 9th century, a genius ruler of Al-Andalus acts as a Charlemagne analogue and conquers all of Francia and Lombardy to boot. Western Europe, save the British Isles, is eventually Islamized. Unfortunately, this focus on Francia means that a group of Donatist Berbers take over southern Iberia.

In 1066, the Muslim ruler of Normandy conquers the British Isles. Five years later, the emperor of the Caliphate of Rum is crushed in the Battle of Manzikert against a vast army of Nestorian Turks.

By 1100, Islam is a religion found in Europe + coastal Anatolia + Ethiopia. North Africa and many Sub-Saharan areas follow Donatism, Chalcedonianism, and other forms of Christianity, while the Middle East is predominantly Nestorian. Muslim rulers in norther Spain are pressing hard on Romance-speaking Donatist Berbers in Andalusia, while the Turks are at the gates of the Hellenic Muslim empire of Rum.

In effect, Islam and Christianity have switched places.

I know this is totally implausible but it was pretty fun to think about.
