Though you may want to note that Clements writes in The Pirate King: Coxinga and the Fall of the Ming Dynasty the titular marauder had two elite units, the Black Guard (African former slaves of the Portuguese) and the Iron Men, so "Men of Iron" wouldn't necessarily be a new concept to the Ming loyalists.
