I am currently starting my extended project which ( after switching between the south sea bubble, King John and the Punic wars) I settled on one of my favorite periods; late 14th century Italy and the Condottieri mercenary bands like Sir John Hawkwood. In particular, my EPQ postulates on a statement numerous historians I've read have suggested: that by helping Venice, Milan and Florence ( as well as helping the papacy return to Rome) the foreign Condottieri unwittingly helped to kick start the Italian renaissance.
I ask the knowledgeable people of this board several questions:
1: Is there any substance to this idea, and to what extend did these mercenaries contribute?
2: what other causes were there? The causes I've already read up on include the fall of Constantinople, the Black death and rise of the Merdici. Can you help me elaborate on these or any other overlooked factors?
3: Finally, when do YOU personally feel is the real starting point of the Renaissance-if you even believe it was a real cultural event.
For all these questions, sources and book recommendations would be extremely helpful ( preferably in English.)
Much obliged for any help!
