I'm not sure whether to put this in Chat or here in After 1900, but I'll put it here anyway.
I was recently having a discussion with a friend about the military regime in Fiji (I am half-Fijian, so it's of particular interest to me). I made the comment that up until May 2009 when draconian measures against dissent were introduced, the coup in Fiji and the subsequent military regime (and all the previous ones

) were relatively 'civilised', and allowed most freedoms and even minor peaceable dissent to continue. I said something along the lines of 'just like if there was a coup in the UK or any other English-speaking country; the regime was undemocratic but relatively humane.'
Afterwards, this got me thinking, what would a UK under military rule be like? Would it be as I described or would a regime 100% committed to succeeding resort to brutal measures, given that in the UK, with its long history of democratic rule, there would likely be more opposition to it, rather than the calm acquiescence of most Fijians.
BTW, I realised that having a coup in the UK is basically ASB, but I just thought it was an interesting question.
