Coup in Canada?

I was just wondering, as the Americans seemed rather happy to overthrow socialist governments, especially in South America, regardless of legitimacy, I was wondering what they would do if Canada were to have elected a socialist government during the height of the Cold War?

I'm not sure if the Americans would do that, since Canada has ties to Britain with the monarchy. Maybe if the Americans could convince the queen (or you could have a POD that has some anti socialist king/queen rise after or before WW2, Edward VIII?) that Canada has become evil because of the socialists? If there was to be an american oriented coup, I'm guessing there would be a slight balkanization or that territory be secceded to the US. I think it could be possible in the 50's but not in the 60's or 70's.

No action as long as Canada remained a part of NATO. If Canada was going red, the USA would invade and annex.

Nothing. Trudeau was buddies with Castro.
Latin America was a closer analogue to the Warsaw Pact than NATO when it comes down to it really.

This isn't fallout or TL-191, Canada would simply have a puppet installed and not be annexed. The US didn't invade and annex Mexico when it elected a socialist-type government.

That's true. Canada and Mexico were a special case in the Americas, Canada much more so of course.

The only time the US participated in overthrowing governments in Latin America is when they thought they might go Communist. Democratic socialists didn't have much to fear, just like French Socialists, British Labor, German SPD, or any of the Scandinavian countries had anything to fear.

When there were coups, it was generally because there were people in the country who desperately wanted to get rid of their own government, but they wanted to make sure the US would not side with the real government. US involvement was generally brought in near the end of the plot and did not instigate the coups (there are exceptions like in Guatemala). This is not to excuse US actions, but to place them in their proper context.

To get Canada into the same place where the US would think vital interests were threatened by the Canadian government would require so many changes as to make the world very strange from OTL.
