Countries which could have realistically been much more populous today?

With a PoD of 1850 or later, which countries--other than Germany and Russia--could have realistically been much more populous today?

Also, for the record, I am talking about countries in their current borders; thus, having a country be more populous because it keeps more territory certainly wouldn't count for this.

Anyway, any thoughts on this?

The USA if it had been colonized earlier or received more immigration. From its agricultural output, it could have perhaps twice the population.
Makes sense; after all, the U.S.'s population is still growing at a relatively decent pace even right now.

Also, though, what about Canada, Australia, and New Zealand?

Canada could have a lot more people based on its agricultural output, amount of fresh water, and petroleum reserves. But only modern agricultural techniques could allow it to reach its full output, so Canada's population would have to grow very quickly from the late 19th century into the 20th century to be significantly higher than OTL.

Australia is already close to its sustainable limit due to the lack of arable land, lack of water, and lack of petroleum.

I can't comment on New Zealand.

OK. Also, though, I've got a question--could Palestine/Israel be more populous without the Holocaust?

Without the Holocaust the majority of the Jewish population would probably remain in Central-Eastern Europe rather than emigrating.
What about if the Nazis, say, kill 500,000 to 1 million of them but fail to have enough time to kill the rest of them, though?

With a greater population to draw on, due a lesser holocaust I would say yes. A nation developing in the 49 era and on would not be restricted by its food production, more on what it can afford to import.
Israel would have enough money to import much more food in this TL, correct?

Most likely it would, hard to say for sure without the changes to history to back it up. I would say though the American Jewish population would pay and support government aid if needed.

But it would still have more people even within our TL's 1967 borders, correct?
Probably, but it depends on how many immigrate to the US, how much land in Palestine is annexed/settled, and what happens to the Palestinians in an Israel that demands more land.

I would have to say Ireland had other policies been taken post '22 (leaving aside of course a different outcome to the famine), a stronger economy would have reduced emigration which would have strengthened the economy and so on (for example with the stronger economy of the last 2 decades and predictions of the 2, the population has grown by over a million and predicted to grow by another million by 2040).

Also, not sure if this counts as "Russia" since it was part of the Russian Empire in 1850, but Ukraine could definitely have a higher population without the Russian Revolution, the Holodomor, and WW2.
