Could WWI have been postponed?

From what I understand, Austria-Hungary really wanted to go to war with Serbia, but neither Germany nor Russia wanted this to happen. Could Germany and Russia have forced their respective allies into a mediation of some sort over the death of Archduke Franz Ferdinand? Could this have been resolved short of war? I am sure that a general World War would probably have broken out later over something else, but could this bomb be defused prior to explosion?

Easily. From the time when AH sent their demands to Serbia, no other European power took the blindest bit of notice to the brewing crisis. It wasn't until the July Ultimatum where Austria began pissing about playing silly buggers making more unreasonable demands that the Russians began to rattle the saber. AH couldn't stand without German support and if the Kaiser had paid closer attention to events in the Balkans, he might have been able to "encourage" more moderation. France too could have held the Russians in check and Britain who enjoyed playing world mediator could have done more too.

WW1 was completely avoidable, too much money was being wasted on maintaining wastefully huge armies and armament spending which wouldn't have lasted another five years without left-wing parties (which were slowly but inexoribly on the rise) demanding cuts.

Ironically probably the best way to avoid a general war is to have Austria invade as soon after the assassination as it can before anyone else has time to start beating their war drums. If Austria can win fast enough Russia isn’t likely to move toward war because if it starts mobilizing Germany’s going to respond and frankly can invade far quicker than Russia can get a significant number of troops to the front.
Sadly trying to avoid the war diplomatically is likely to prove far trickier given the general attitudes, beliefs, and personalities of the time.
