Could the UK leave the EEC/EU after 1972?

I'm guessing that the only way to ensure economic benefits would be to go for a US-UK FTA, because the fabled Commonwealth trading area is just that, an ASB fable. Try to avoid the phile v. skeptic from Chat.

I don't think a Commonweath trading area is a fable. Certainly not such areas as Canada, Australia, New Zealand, and the West Indies and Pacific territories.

India, Pakistan, and Africa would be a separate matter....

While not of a size to be a permanent trading block in and of itself, it could form the basis to negotiate free trade with the US on a somewhat equal basis and then from there arrange free trade with other first world economies such as Japan, South Korea, Europe, etc...

I'm thinking of using this in a TL, but I wonder if SA could be included, and whether Verwoerd would still pull out and declare the Republic. Of course that was before his pragmatic reconciliation with the English community.
