In the aftermath of La Violencia, the war between Liberals and Conservatives in Colombia in the 40s and 50s, the Communists started mobilizing the rural peasants as supporters against a government that was directly attacking small-scale family farms as part of its vision of corporate-structured industrialization. FARC, the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, was founded by the Colombian Communist Party in 1964, becoming (in)famous throughout the world for its organization, influence, and use of ransoming and other criminal methods.
Historically, FARC and groups like it eventually became a self-sustaining left-wing terrorist organization. But what if they chose to confront the government more...directly?
If the PCC and its armed wings, such as FARC, really committed to the complete overthrow of the Colombian government, starting around the late 50s-early 60s, could they succeed? What would a PCC-controlled Colombia look like? Would America be looking at another Vietnam in their own backyard?
