Could the Paulet Affair have gone in Paulet's favor?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paulet_affair_(1843)

would it be possible for George Paulet to have the Affair be in his favor, meaning a British annexation/takeover of Hawaii, or was there too much opposition in the first place?

It's less that the British were inherently opposed, more that he did it without any orders whatsoever. Needless to say that didn't shine a favorable light on it to Admiral Thomas, and when London found out they were even less enthused. He was basically annexing the place because he felt like it.
