Could The Mummy have been the next Indiana Jones?

What if instead of having sequels focus on retreads, Imhotep, and other mummies, the franchise decided to set the sequel in a different place and pursue a different supernatural element? They did eventually move the Third movie to China, but it was still based on Mummies and the series had lost momentum.

IMO it was really Fraser’s charisma and the sense of adventure that drove audiences to the original, not Imhotep or mummies.

Would this have been more successful than the OTL? Would Fraser have had a more successful career? Might this be able to continuously make new sequels to the present?

I think it could have, I mean Fraser is a great actor, and The Mummy is actually a good movie, the real problem is what/how do you rebrand the franchise into something non-mummy related?

I think a sequel could have worked just as well if they'd had him go to Romania to fight fascist vampires or Spain to fight, I don't know, whatever sort of monster they have in Spain that could be serving some villain in the Spanish Civil War.

But just for the record this franchise lives on as a fifth prequel film is currently in production, showcasing the life of Brendan Fraser's nemesis the Scorpion King.

Who last I saw had completely ditched deserts to fight elephants in jungles.
