Could the LTTE have won the Sri Lankan Civil War?

I've been reading a lot about these guys lately, and my interest was piqued. Had they been more moderate in their views and less militarily aggressive(and didn't assassinate the President of India), would an LTTE victory be possible? They did manage to wage war for over 30 years, and came close to overpowering the Sinhalese forces at some points. If their leadership was less genocidal and the organization shied away from practices like child conscription, could they have won some international recognition and thus discredit the Sri Lankan government? Was Tamil Eelam ever a real possibility?

The problem with this is that the LTTE couldn't NOT be genocidal. Sure, they could, if they were led by different people, but that wouldn't be the same organisation. And Tamil Eelam couldn't survive as a state. International pariah, with an unfriendly, bigger country next to it that will militarise. The ONLY possible way IMHO, is if the Indians decided to help out more or intervene in Sri Lanka. Unlikely though, considering that India is focused perpetually on Pakistan.
