Between 1444 to 1449 the city of Soest, at that time the richest city in the duchy of westphalia, fought for independence against the archbishop of Cologne. In the end Soest was free from Cologne and became a privileged part of the duchy of Cleves. This ruined both Soest and the duchy of Westphalia economically and the region ended just like the rest of westphalia a rather irrelevant part of the HRE.
So my question is could the feud end in even favourable terms for the city? I thought that maybe Soest could become the center of a westphalian confederacy with the other cities and knights of the duchy united in one political entity similar to the old swiss confederacy. Is this even feasible or would they rather choose a new duke for westphalia if the whole duchy revolted against the elector in cologne?
