Could the Democrats (90s) move so right that they split?

There was certainly a lot of progressive and liberal grumbling with the Democrats in the period of DLC dominance from the early 90s to the mid 00s. However, winning elections kind of made it moot.

Could the Democrats in the 90s and 00s move so far to the right than it causes the party left to break off?

Had Bill Clinton privatized Social Security with Newt Gingrich, for example, I would think it'd be a massive massive political fissure.

A common European joke is that, in the US, you have two choices - the right and the far right. This would make it true even by American standards, especially when the pendulum swings back to the GOP in the 2000s.

Frankly, if the Dems split, the GOP - especially the far right - wins big. Gore gets a ton of his base bled from him, like what happened with Nader times five at least. Bush probably still gets the nod, stocks his Cabinet even more full of hawks and demagogues, and when 9/11 happens, he has carte blanche to do pretty much whatever he wants short of amending the Constitution. His re-election is assured in blowout fashion as disillusioned progressives stay home, emigrate, or crowd into coastal cities. There will be a HUGE divide between the “coastal elites” full of gays, minorities, irreligious people, and the last remaining Muslims versus “real America” which is smaller cities, conservative cities in solidly red states, and rural areas.

By now, the progressive movement might be rebounding, but selling it to the GOP’s wide base would be next to impossible. The divide would be with the young and old, with the young flocking to cities and rebuilt neighborhoods. Some progressives would get elected, but the GOP would be in its fifth term in the White House, likely with their third President.
