Could slavery have been expanded further?

WI the Slave power had kept their undue influence over the US in the 50s and 60s. Could slavery have been a significatn factor in Oklahoma (indian territory) Kansas, New Mexico or Arizona?

I assume not. So was there anty point in Sessession since all Republicans expected to do was prevent expansion.

I have a suspsicion that even if there had been a President Breckinridge Missouri deciding to become free was mroe likely than Kansas beig maintained as a slave state

I think it could have expanded further inside the CSA territory... there was a lot of undeveloped land in the western parts of it that might have worked for plantation style slavery. Elsewhere though... I have my doubts. One of my books speculates that slavery might have been used on big ranches west of the Mississippi, but I wonder if ranching pays enough to support it. Slavery worked in the south because tobacco and cotton were such high-demand big cash crops... it worked less well in producing basic agricultural stuff, and free farmers in the north outproduced slave-based food farming by a considerable degree (someone at the time did a study...). I really have no idea if cotton and tobacco will grow well in midwestern states like Nebraska...

Probably not. But I guess that won't stop slavers if given any opportunity.
