Could Perot win in 1992?

I admit I voted for him. I don't care what Clinton said he cost H.W. The election. However, in my little series of questions - could be have won? Especially has he not dropped out over the Summer?

Perhaps if he would pick better VP candidate and gets somehow better campaign but not sure if he still can't win election. He might get some electrotal votes, perhaps even couple states but unsure that he can take White House.

From what I understand Admiral Stockdale was a stand in, who was not supposed to be elected.

I honestly don't think so. People mention that at one point he was leading in the polls, but given most of his best states were smaller states, I don't think he could have reached 270 (and I don't think any house would have picked Perot in a deadlocked EC).

Yeah if it is thrown into the House, William Jefferson Clinton is elected. That would have been scary level hate. I honestly think he gets impeached in '97 if he is elected that way.

You'd have to really fine-tune an AH scenario to make it happen, but it's certainly possible. Engineer it so that both the Democrat and the Republican are significantly unpopular by the late stages of the campaign. I think everyone can imagine a venal scenario to derail Clinton in October. For Bush you'd have to use more imagination, but it's never out of the realm of possibility for politicians to make career-killing mistakes. Just time both nosedives for October, have Perot stay in it the whole time, have him run a more professional campaign (and yeah, that probably means a more polished running mate even though that's not totally important), and as a personal plea from 9-year-old me, have him NOT PREEMPT THE YOUNG INDIANA JONES CHRONICLES WEEK AFTER WEEK TO RUN HIS STUPID INFOMERCIALS -okay sorry, I'm back in control now.

Ahem. And that's how you do it.

Would need a few things to happen:

Avoid dropping out and re-entering. Tap down the crazy a little bit
Better running mate- as pointed out, Stockdale was never really supposed to run- just be placeholder
Have both Clinton and Bush/Quale stumble a little.
Clinton survived the numerous allegations but if one of them had more substance..If Hillary decided to divorce him during the race it would be fatal to his campaign.
Bush could have a health scare leading to more concern over Quayle who could easily have more gaffs

Even then would be tough for an outright win

Pretty much this. Without the electoral college he has a chance.

Don't exit the race, act less crazy, and pick a better running mate.

As for VPs,

Jerry Brown hated Clinton and was close to Perot on the issues
Jeanne Kirkpatrick considered joining the ticket historically
John McCain loved Ross Perot for taking care of his wife while he was in Vietnam (but Perot thought McCain abandoned his wife for a younger prettier richer woman so...)

The best option would not be a win - but a holding of a good percentage of the Electoral college so that a third party gets permanent status on the next election.
