Could Humphrey have won in 68?

I know many of you would find it unlikely but I believe it was very possible. All Humphrey needed to win were Ohio, Illinois and California all of which he lost by 3 percentage points or less. If he had hammered Nixon on the Paris Peace Accords days before the election he might have swayed enough independents to carry those states and win the race. How would Humphrey fair as president and how would this effect the electoral realignment that was taking place at the time.

He goes on Laugh-In. :D

Seriously, an earlier break with the Johnson administration could've done it, a less hawkish VP, a southern one instead. Sen. Fulbright would've likely given the Dems Arkansas (Missouri too?) and silenced a great deal of critics on the Left.

Depending how each state goes, Humphrey either wins it outright or it goes to the House, Humphrey wins it there.

Wait...

You're saying Fulbright was to Muskie's left?

Not on all issues, just Fulbright's critiques of Vietnam, combined with more 'reserved' social positions would simultaneously quell the (white) New Left and fears of the middle class established.

As close as that election was, of course Humphrey could have won. The easiest route is changing his Vietnam policy earlier. Or as I read in a AH anthology book, RFK lives and is his running mate. I think Wallace hurt Nixon more, so a better running mate for Wallace is an option.
