Could Hess become Fuhrer? Or is it ASB?

I feel like Himmler would make a better successor than Goering, primarily due to the batcrap insane evil that Himmler was. Forget Hess. He's a byword even by Nazi standards.

and more intelligent. Not so much after the throne though. But they where just as antisemitic as Hilter, ready to do the deed. Good leader skills too.

It wasn't so much as Hess being insane as him being completely incompetent as a leader and decision maker. His insanity in my opinion was just acting to get away from the death penalty.
He stopped that game before he was sentenced. I think he might have been scared he would be fed to the Soviets and taken to Moscow and put in a cage in the Red Square.

He was getting psychiatric help as early as 1942 in the UK. His psychiatrist John Rawlings Rees said he was mentally ill, but not insane. By then he was already talking about magic powers and mind control.

He would have to deal with the generals very quickly most of whom would rather blow out their brains then have the chicken farmer as their CIC. Its not impossible to have a Himmler government, but it would require a Great Purge of the officer corps which would leave the German Army badly brain damaged as the high level officers and generals are the brain of any military.

I guess you need to have Goring, Himmler, Goebbels, Bormann, Heydrich, Lammers, Rosenberg, Frick and Frank all dead before Hess gets a shot at the title.

Hell, even von Ribbentrop and Speer could get it before Hess would.

After those people would come generals next, before Hess would get a chance 'to show his quality'.

How about my suggestion above? Generals and top party leaders retaining Hess as a figurehead (wave at parades make some occasional speech etc.) with no powers at all while all powers are divided between Goering, Himmler, Heydrich etc.

That could keep Germany afloat during WWII... In any other case i foresee a bloody struggle among top Nazi leaders which will cost Germany the war...

Fascism leaves no room for figureheads. The Leader is the Leader and it is through Him and Him Alone that the People's Destiny is Manifest.

A generals coup could lead to one general as 'the leader', but could also lead to a military junta with a few generals making the decisions and using some figurehead as a puppet and public face of the regime.

We have seen both happen many times across history.

Err, yeah. So long as Goering lives, Himmler isn't getting the Big Seat. Goering, for all of his faults, was a military man. He's shot & killed plenty during the first European tango. If Himmler made a go for power like that, his ass would be planted faster than one would think is possible.

For Himmler to have a chance, Goering must already be dead. It's that simple. For all Goering's pomp and excess, he possessed a mind sharper than a blade, and enough charisma to replace Hitler.

I will freely admit that, of any of the Nazis, Goering is my favorite. I'm well aware of his crimes, his evil. But that doesn't stop him from being a magnificent bastard.

Goering reminded me more of a mob boss then a political leader.

Also, the Heer would have to be purged big time for Himmler to take over along with much of the top of the Nazi Party having 'accidents'.
