If they had an S/N America ex colony like US (okay, well the British part expanded out) or Brazil to Portugal.
I've been hearing people saying French is becoming more obsolete overall and this stems from the fact of native speakers and the countries that do have a french speaking majority speaking aren't really as regarded as important, save for France.
Now I say N/S America because in the case of Asia or Africa, majority of the native peoples in most of the countries don't speak the colonial language and it tends to be minorities.
So say, if France had a big colony/country in the Americas, say it had a majority french speaking population and a population of Mexico or Brazil and the country wasn't super poor, would French have a much more "important" to people nowadays? I mean, English did take over partly cause of US's big population and superpower status, but french was widely spoken before that?
P.S - First post and I'm sorry if this the wrong categorization but I argued it made sense to put it here as I'm talking about french being more widely spoken nowadays in this day and age. Thanks, just curious.
