I'm currently reading "The Guns of August" and from my understanding, France was building up it's empire and military for some future war against the Germans where they intended to reclaim Alsace-Lorraine. As we know, this war turned out to be the Great War (or World War One). Assuming a world wsr never happens, or is delayed to such an extent that it's not happening in the foreseeable future.

Could France, at some point, alone, with the resources of its empire ever hope to take the fight to the Germans and reclaim their lost territory? Was there ever really a serious plan for France to fight the Germans without the aid of the British or Russians, assuming the Germans receive no aid either. This is strictly a question for France. I'm fully aware of the German plans for an invasion of France, and from my understanding, both sides saw it as a who would strike first situation.
