Indeed, it would be one of the few times that I can think of where the President would be so popular that they could probably still survive without a party in the House or Senate and actually translate that popularity into getting stuff done. Wonder if he would encourage and endorse independents that he likes/approves of to run and if it would be enough to help them.

Those types of scenarios usually don't bode well for democracy.
Eisenhower would make a decent Ataturk type figure, but that would have far-reaching consequences.
