Could Ecoonomic sanctions have worked?

I know the politics and economics of this make it hard but had the US and the League applied serious sanctions against Japan at the time of the invasion of Manchuria might Japan have been forced to withdraw.

Might this have deterred Mussolini?

The U.S. and the USSR weren't in the League of Nations. The Senate rejected the Treaty of Versailles. So the answer to both your questions, Derek, is no. It's totally ASB.

I knew that the US was not part of the League. However there were elemets in America which were sympathetic to China. My thought is that both the League and the US might mount sanctions.

On the other hand I had not thought about the USSR. Then why would Stalin want to be nice to Imperial Japan.
