Could Dewey have run in 1952?

I'm not entirely clear on why he didn't run, although I'm guessing it had something to do with losing in 1948 and 1944. But, if Eisenhower hadn't been interested, could Dewey have run for a third time?

Yep that's basically it. Dewey by 1952 was a proven loser and probably the Republicans would have nominated Taft over him. His best chance was almost certainly in 1948, when there was no war but to win then he would have needed to have campaigned much more vigirously than he actually did.

Dewey sits out '44, Bricker gets to be the sacrificial lamb. Taft gets the nomination in '48. Dewey wins in '52.

Dewey could not have won the nomination. Instead, either Earl Warren or a relative unknown is nominated following the failure of Taft and Dewey on multiple ballots. Or Walt Disney is nominated:eek:

I don't think Warren had any intention of running. His campaign was a joke. If it wasn't Eisenhower, I have the feeling Taft was going to clinch the nomination.

The funny thing is that a joke campaigner can end up as anominee, especially in those days, Perhaps Taft does get the nod, but he will need a running mate acceptable to the left of the party, and that individual could end up as President if the Democrats are still defeated in the presidential election that year.

Harold Stessen seems alright. He seems moderate enough to appeal to the moderate and liberal wings. It's not like Taft was in good health anyways. He would die relatively early in his term - like several months into his first term. So we have Stessen as President.

You beat me to it - STASSEN 52

So, we see Taft-Stassen in 1952?

Also McCarthy and maybe MacArthur.

Would Taft have accepted Tailgunner Joe as a running mate? I'm not really clear on how nominating conventions worked in 1952, so maybe he wouldn't have had a choice, but wikipedia says Taft didn't approve of red-baiting.
