This is another of my very broad level questions. I am specifically not interested in whether the USA could have abolished slavery before cotton became a major cash crop. What I’m interested in is how viable would the cotton economy have been in the absence of slavery?
Could some combination of indentured servitude and sharecropping have been appealing enough to both landowners and potential workers - the latter likely from Africa - for a cotton economy to thrive?
