Couild Long have come Second in 1936

I have heard it claimed that Long's strategy was to run as a third party candidate in 1936, believing that this would give the election to the Republicans and that they would so screw things up he could win in 1940.

Looking at the actual result I wonder if he could have got more votes than Landon,

If he did how much does this damage the Republicans

No he could not have. I had him garnering just under 10% in my TL (which does not have FDR in '32), with 35 for Landon and 54 for the Dems.

I thought Long's master plan was to have someone else run under a "Share Our Wealth" banner or something similar in 1936 in order to split the vote with the Democrats and allow the GOP to retake the White House. That way in 1940 he could campaign for the Democratic Nomination under a Share Our Wealth banner and win the presidency.

It was, both the OP and RB are assuming a change of plan I guess.

Why should it happen at all? A Republican voter who can't stomach FDR will certainly be unable to stomach Long, so Landon's vote can't be squeezed much more than it was. So Long would have to push Roosevelt into third place, which is surely ASB.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. The idea IIRC was, after some acolyte of Long had run in 1936, splitting the leftwing vote and giving the GOP the White House, Long would then campaign to gain the Democratic Nomination in 1940 and subsequently the White House. Though I agree with RB that such a plan is highly ASB even with FDR's assassination.
