Cost of reconstruction

Does anyone have a link to - or is privy of - information regarding the overall cost of reconstruction of the American South following the Civil War. Specifically, was it a 'net loss' economically speaking to reabsorb the former Confederate states during the reconstruction era?

Only the cost of maintaining an army of occupation - a cost which rapidly dwindled due to the shrinking size of the US Army.

Obviously, the ruined condition of the South meant that the US got less from it in taxes than before the War - but that wasn't due to Reconstruction as such.
