As they say a problem shared is a problem halved.

In my tl, my protagonists are a western aligned country that have expanded their military rapidly to protect their territorial integrity from Communist aggression in the mid 1960s to mid 1970s. The critical issue, is that the expansion of the Army means that commanding officers of larger formations have inadequate 'seasoning' to assume command, which manifests itself at the Brigade level and above. Consequently, the number of potential Divisional Officers is quite low and, one of the reasons that I wait until 1972 for my protagonists to conduct Divisional operation.

In the background the initial skirmishes have expanded in intensity from Company sized engagements to Brigades and then in the early 1970s to multi divisional operations. Consequently, by 1975 / 1976, within my TL, the Army needs to be able to conduct a Corps sized (4 + Divisions) engagement. While, they could internally promote an Officer to this role, any Officer IMO would have inadequate experience to assume the position. Ideally, my ideal candidate should have a posting as a deputy Corps Commander to learn the ropes, prior to assuming command.

With this in mind, I think it would be a prudent step for my protagonists to turn to their allies in 1973 / 1974 to request advisory support to establish a Corps level headquarters and, a temporary Corps Commander. This enables my candidate to learn at a rapid, but not impossible pace and for their skills to be deepened.

Consequently, here are a couple of potential Corps Commanders that I have considered, but would like a second opinion on:

General John Vessey (United States Army & has already appeared in TTL)
General Chae Myun-shin (former commander of all ROK forces in Vietnam)
General Raoul Salan (still in country ITTL as an instructor with their Staff & Command College).
Major General Ronald Hughes (Australian Army - former commander 1ATF)
Général de corps d'armée Marcel Bigeard (French Army retires in 1974)

Thoughts or suggestions for other Western militaries within the time period?
