Point of Divergence ... We know that based on archeological discoveries that the Vikings made several excursions to North America in the area known as Greenland and settlements were made there, roughly between 900 and 1000 AD. Some discoveries have been made that have called into question the idea that the Vikings may have moved further South, such as the discovery of rune stone. While most of these are dismissed as hoaxes, it begs an interesting question.

At this same time, the Maya civilization was going through the Post Classic Period. On the downward swing after what some historians believe was a famine or an increase in warring state in the 900s, the Mayan population had relocated to local water sources and at the time of the Viking Settlements, the city state of Chichen Itza still existed, although by the end of the 11th Century, the city was abandoned.

What would have happened had the Vikings made contact with the Post Classic Mayans? Would the Vikings had seen the Mayan kingdom as ripe for conquest and wiped the remains of the Mayan Empire out? Or would the Mayans have been able to stand up to the Vikings in some way shape or form?
