Constitution provides for Special Presidential electin

WI the US Constitution, either originally or perhaps by amendment after 1841 provided for a special election in the event of a Presidential vacancy with more that 1 year to go in the term?

Someone would probably figure out that such an amendment would be expensive if one would have to hold another nationwide election to fill such a vacancy - especially when there is the Vice President. At the most it would be likely that a special election by Congress may elect a president.

Hopefully such a goofy amendment will be defeated early on.

OTL, many folks in 1841 thought John Tyler as only Acting President and argued that a new election should be held. There wasn't really a way around the fact that Article II is pretty clear that the Vice-President assumes power.

While a special election would be expensive from a simple financial point of view, it would allow for a bit more democracy: an election by Congress of the President opens a huge can of very dangerous worms -- the expereinces of 1800 and 1824 suggest finding a way around the situtation is preferable.

Indeed, if special elections had been used, perhaps they could have used in 1876 and 2000 as opposed to Congressional or Judicial chicanery.

It might provide a moment in time where it would be beneficial to assasinate the presedent for a certain group.

Yes but it is already to the advantage of anyone who prefers the VP to the President - and currently the potetial murderer gets much more certainty.
