Okay, maybe best friends goes to far, but could they rule together?
For the sake of argument, suppose Constantius II does not die as IOTL. The forces of Julian and Constantius fight a few indecisive battles. The Sassanids in the East and the Germanics in the West move to take advantage of the situation, and Julian and Constantius recognize that they must come to terms. Constantius recognizes Julian as Augustus in the West and secures some protections for Christians. Julian acknowledges Constantius as the senior emperor while securing significant autonomy. Both return home secure their borders.
Seem reasonable, or are Space Bats dancing a jig?
Could the arangement be (relatively) stable, or will civil war break out as soon as the immediate external threat fades?
